I am doing some research on the relationship between engineering design
standards and the introduction of design innovations.  From a
historical standpoint, I'm interested in the standardization of
railroad guages, which occurred over the period 1860-1885.  I haven't
yet done a literature search on the topic, but I'd be interested in
pointers to references on this subject or on the subject of
standardization generally.
