In 1981, there were 5.3 divorces per 1000 people and in 1982 it went down to 5.1. Half of all divorces come within seven years with the average duration being 9.4 years. Divorce rates by age group for women: divorces per 1000 women 15-19 45.6 20-24 44.5 25-29 35.9 30-34 28.5 35-39 22.9 40-44 17.7 45-49 11.8 Only ten percent of divorcing men and 7 percent of divorcing women were 50 years of age and over. The number of children affected by divorce fell from 1,180,000 in 1981 to 1,108,000 in 1982. In only ten percent of the cases did both partners feel divorce improved their lives. 20 percent of both partners were miserable after divorce. 63 percent of couples reported life had become better for one partner, the other reported no change. Of those reporting that they were happier after their marriage broke up, 55 percent were female. Only 32 percent of the men felt their lives were improved. The majority of the women reporting an improvement in their lives after divorce were younger. 41 percent of the women who remarried remained furious at their ex-husbands a decade later.
