The part of the report that I call your attention to was the story of the young woman (late 30's) who had devoted herself to her career and placed a low priority on getting married and starting a family. She had indicated that, at the time she started her career, a family just wasn't important. The reporter of the story made it a point to show that she had become very successful (could afford nice clothes, go on vacations wherever she wanted, etc.) - but that it was not enough for her happiness. In fact, in her interview she indicated that she wished she had not placed such an emphasis on her career. I can't recall exactly what she said in her inter- view but it was to the effect that she was now realizing that 1) her child bearing years were running out, and 2) she was facing the prospect of having to live the rest of her life alone. I don't know what to say about this except that I found it quite remarkable (and sad) that this woman would go on national tv and talk about herself in this way. Is it possible that we young professionals are so wrapped up in our careers, material things, and our work so as to neglect what is really important? (this is a rhetorical question) To me, families and friendships are the most important things in life and we should work to support these things. In fact a book I read sort of put "it" into perspective for me: _The Friendship Factor_ by David Loy McGinnis. It's small and fast reading and I recommend it highly. -- ----- Glen Fujimori Boeing Aerospace, Seattle, WA (206) 773-7408 ihnp4!uw-beaver!ssc-vax!fuji -----
