What did he give to baseball that none of his peers gave? He may have been one of the sweetest swingers of all time (I saw him play for many years), but he never was a winner (although like Walter Payton, he deserved to be). If I were a sportswriter, I would really have to think hard before I elected him. Ernie Banks hit 200 more homers (roughly speaking) and also won back-to- back MVP's (as a shortstop!!!). THe only thing that Williams might be remembered for (in 50 years) is winning the batting title (in '72 or '71). Glen Beckert once hit .365, but no one mentions it too often.
