However, the usage is derived from "graphic arts"; i.e., the words and numbers are produced by (electronic) graphic arts techniques, as opposed to live video. In graphic arts lingo, such a production is called a "graphic." The sportscasters seem to have picked up on this specialized use of the term. (Sportscaster: What is it? Graphic Artist: It's a graphic. Sportscaster: Oh.)
