When I phoned Sony about it, they confirmed that it was a misprint that used an "early prototype". So I got out a screwdriver and looked inside the regular North American unit that I recently bought to see how things were behind the panel. Surprise! Even though the switch has only two positions in its normal state, it will click into *three* different positions if you remove the bezel and a blocking sleeve. As usual, it isn't as simple as that. When you click the switch into the "illegal" position, it switches into (ugh) Beta III . What nerve! I think its going to take a little more, like the schematics of the Japanese model.
