I have one tape that screeches something awful - It's a TDK SA90 about 2 years old. My deck is a Nakamichi BX300 (Dual capstan). The tape makes a continuous screeching sound from the mechanism itself (not from the the speakers). It doesn't make noise in my cheap pioneer single capstan machine. Also, I took the tape out of it's original housing and exchanged it with a quiet tape. The noise followed the tape itself and the quiet tape remained quiet even in the originally noisy housing. My suspicion is that the tape picked up some sort of contamination which causes it to slip in one of the capstans. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? (I now use Maxell tapes :-)) -- Alan Cheilek UUCP:{seismo,allegra,brl-bmd}!umcp-cs!cvl!cheilek AT&T: (301) 454-5858 ARPA:cheilek@cvl.UMD.EDU or cheilek@NRL.ARPA
