I purchased a 1986 Honda Civic Si two weeks ago and have had neither
the jerking problem or the exhaust smell problem you have reported.
So far, everything works perfectly. (cross my fingers)

In any case, it would not be a bad idea to let your car warm up for a
few seconds before moving it and being gentle the first few minutes.

If your Honda is NOT fuel injected, it probably uses the CVCC principle,
which may account for your poor driveability when cold. I don't know
about the smell problem.
