Paul Bikle's 1961 sailplane altitude record may be in jeopardy.  According 
to a Feb "Soaring" letter and editorial response, a group at Tehachapi 
calling themselves Flight Level 500 plan to exceed that altitude, and 
". . . there is a good possibility that by the time you read this an 
attempt will have been made for the record".   Equipment is a Twin Astir
with pressure suits for both crew members.  The Sierra wave has been 
encountered beyond FL600, so the lift is there.
