It's one way to relieve the tension. For instance, here's one that's sometimes told among pilots of single-engine airplanes: What do you do if you're flying at night over unfamiliar terrain and your engine quits? Answer: you glide until you're low enough that your landing light will show you what's down there. If you like what you see, go ahead and land. If you don't like it, turn the light off again. People who think this is merely sick humor are missing the point.
