This is the standard party line. However, I will not carry around messy pieces of carbon paper to save the credit card companies from suffering this type of loss. They should control their merchants more carefully. If carbons are dangerous to their profits they should require the merchant to destroy them (as many do), or use NCR paper. Remember that you are not (in practice) liable for this kind of fraud. If you do not keep your copies and check your bill carefully you will eventually loss money to mistakes, even if no one steals your number. -- Stephen J.
