HOUSE APPROVES BAN ON CALLS by MONTE PLOTT and SAM HOPKINS The Georgia House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill that would prohibit the use of computerized telephone calls to sell services. The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Cathey W. Steinberg (D-Atlanta), would make it a misdemeanor for businesses to call individuals with recorded sales messages. They would be allowed to use computer equipment for calls only if a "live" operator first asked the individual's permission to play the message. The measure, which now goes to the Senate, would not prohibit computerized calls by non-profit organizations. Neither would it prohibit recorded messges sought by the caller, such as time and temperature services. Rep. Steinberg said unsolicited automated calls had prompted a flood of complaints from individuals and corporations. "One hospital reported getting five (recorded) calls to its operating room during surgery", she said. -- Jeff Offutt School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta Georgia, 30332 ...!{akgua,allegra,amd,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo,ut-ngp}!gatech!gitpyr!ofut
