I agree that this is a bug, though I had never tamed a cockatrice before so I didn't know that the proper behavior occurs in that case (though the fact that it does argues more strongly that it's a bug). (in 1.0.2 and 1.0.3) So yes, it should be changed, except that the author of the game is no longer on the net.
