      After reading through the speculation offered over the net by various
      people, I have one piece of advice for your friend:

      GET A LAWYER!

      Find out what the law really says about the situation. Initial
      consultations are not expensive, and some lawyers in some places
      offer a free initial phone consultation. Don't be screwed over
      by some sleezy, fascist corporation-- find out your rights.
      Further, find out if there are any state or federal agencies to
      report this company to, who could cause them grief
