It amazes me how some of those old trick questions that have been around for
decades can still fool people.

Not so!  Gold and other precious metals are measure in Troy weight.
Roughly 14.5 ounces troy equal 16 ounces normal (avoirdupois) therefore
an ounce of gold weighs about 10% more than an ounce of feathers.
An ounce of lead (lead is not valuable) weighs the same as an ounce of
feathers.
