Allthough the rampant bigotry in Fr. Woolley's so-called "joke" is obvious, I thought a few comparisons would make it clear just what is so odious here. First an extremly mild, non-offensive joke: This is for all of you admirers of the Catholic Church. Did you hear that the Pope has declared AIDS a miracle? It turns fruits into vegetables. Another, slightly offensive joke which also turned up recently: How do you sit four gay's on a barstool? An. Turn the stool over. I think the difference is clear. (There was also a Rock Hudson necrophilic Aids joke which was so innocent it was hardly even funny). Now look at Woolley's "joke". The offensivness is in its cleverly concealed homophobia, which is just like the concealed misogyny in his previous "joke". If you compare that "joke" with the tender sweetness of some of the other jokes involving women on the net, you will see what is so different and especially offensive about it. ucbvax!brahms!gsmith Gene Ward Smith/UCB Math Dept/Berkeley CA 94720 ucbvax!weyl!gsmith "When Ubizmo talks, people listen."
