This has also been attributed to Reggie Jackson (who of course
denies the whole thing).  A book I recommend on this is
_There_are_Alligators_in_our_Sewers_; most of the book contains
the truths we all 'know' must be true (they don't build 'em
like they used to; you can't get good steak in cattle country
because they ship them all to New York; etc.), and there is
a good selection of these apocryphal stories in the back.
