My Dad used to have some stuff he sewed leather with and
used it to fix a few pairs of shoes etc. Needles left in
a bar of soap don't get their points banged up and the
soap will lubricate them to. Same goes for saftey pins.
I got a feeling that parafin would work just about as
well.
