     Weren't some of the "spontaneous combustion" cases ones involving
internal "burning" with no external damage?  If so, have you seen the crazy
medicines folks used during the Victorian era?  Crotan oil, for instance, 
which is extremely castic was a common purgative.  When your pharmacy is
largely compiled of poisons it's easy to mess up.
