To all who gave suggestions on my 7300 problems:

Thanks for the help.  It turned out that with respect to my
uucp problems, I had put some local commands into /usr/bin and
had (without thinking) changed the permissions of all commands
in /usr/bin to 755...not a good move.  When I remembered that I had done
this, I promptly found another 7300, looked at the correct permissions
and reset the proper commands, in particular the phone manager and
uucp related commands.
