The niftiest mailer I saw was from (suprise!) THINK technologies, and was indeed implemented as a desk ornament. But there's a catch, that it is that is a >100Kb desk ornament (custom segloader) and it needs a dedicated macintosh to serve as a mail server. It will work with a variety of file server and hard disk drive to store mail, and has BBOARD facilities. All in all, it was sexy. The bad news is, it doesn't support 822 or 920 style mail, when I mentioned this to the rep from THINK he said something on the order of "Oh, thats a good idea, we didn't think about that...", but assured me that they would consider it seriously in light of Apple's commitment to internetworking with DEC/IBM/et al. Now for the really cool info: on Levco's killer Macintosh. For around 6k (yes Virginia, $6000) you can get your Macintosh or Macintosh Plus upgraded to have 4 Mb memory, 20Mb internal drive, 16Mhz 68020 and 16Mhz 68881. I asked them about its speed, and they said it was around 2.5 MIPS, using Mac C from Consuliar with the 68020 option turned on in the compiler. I got to play with it for a few mins, and its was to say the least it was FAST. David HM Spector NYU/acf Systems Group
