I just downline  loaded  the Fade To Black desk accessory written 
and posted by Brian L. Matthews:

It gets rid  of  most all of the last nagging problems I had with 
"Screen Saver" (Fade To  Black  is easy to disable when necessary 
(see below)), it implemented in a VERY nice, auto-installing INIT 
resource method, and uses a cute screen-blank effect to boot.

My one concern still left is  that  when  the  screen goes blank, 
processing  (specifically  KERMIT  transfers) come to a  grinding 
halt.

When  I'm transferring files over a slow link  (or  printing  long 
documents,  etc) I still would like to save the  screen,  but  of 
course would like the task to finish.

Brian,  is it possible for such processing to continue WHILE  the 
screen is blanked?

Anyway, I really recommend Fade To Black!

And  now,  a  comment (Flame).  Time  used  to be where every day 
net.sources.mac would yield several  "goodies" to experiment with 
and learn from.  Recently (shortly after the, in my opinion, VERY 
inappropriate  attack  on Reed's postings (yes,  I  know  it  was 
retracted, but...)) the number of things in  net.sources.mac  has 
been drastically reduced.

PLEASE,  all of you who write interesting things,  remember  that 
most   people  find  most  any  non-destructive  program   either 
interesting, educational, or  both,  and gives you a bit of glory 
on the side.  Keep 'em coming!
