I don't think that you have to be able to relate to it to enjoy it, I was able to empathize with the characters and feel for them without having had the same background experiences. I particularly enjoyed the singing and the cinema- tography. As for reading the book, I have been trying to get it from the library for a year (well before the movie came out) and it is always checked out, guess I'll have to break down and buy it!
