Summary: Have you ever said this to the users at your site?

I recently posted the following text as part of an article to the
news readers on The Well.  Perhaps it's a reasonable example to
be used by other system administrators:

     . . . The well has started to show up on the list of "Most Active"
     participants in USENET -- a distinction that isn't one to be proud of.

     [One participant] was number [xx] on the Top 25 Submitters list, and 
     the well was number 5 on the Top 25 Systems list.  We posted 192.5 kb 
     of data making up 1.7% of the USENET traffic for the last two weeks.

     The net is a very expensive sideline for a number of businesses and
     universitys.  And while I'm very proud of the quality of the submissions
     leaving the Well, I would like you to think twice before submitting a
     news article.

     In particular, before you post a followup article, be sure that the
     same effect wouldn't be produced by mailing a reply to the author of
     the article.  Now that we can find reasonably short paths to most
     machines, this should be easier than before.

     A practice that should be encouraged strongly is that of "summary"
     followups.  If you have a question that you'd like to submit to the
     net, state that responses should be mailed to you, and then summarize
     the mail responses in a posted article.
