We have tried several litters for our ferrets and have finally come up with
one that is cheaper than what you get in the stores, reasonable smelling, etc.
The stuff is made from North Dakotan alfalfa and goes for about $11/hundred
pounds. Shipping is FOB Fargo, ND and may or may not make this stuff cost
effective depending on where you live. They will sell in 25, 50 and 100
pound lots (call or write for details):

In NJ ups for a 25 pound sack runs about $5 -- the stuff is good enough that
it is worth it.
