All seats in the new M1 cars are fixed. 2. LIRR trains are 'double headed' in name only. (Actually I prefer the term 'push-pull' for one engine on each end of the train; 'double headed' has always meant two engines on the same end to me.) If a LIRR train appears to have engines on both ends, one of them is almost certaintly a gutted control cab. (i.e. controls and cab, but no engines, no transformer, no traction motors) LIRR converted a lot of Alco FA's to control cabs; does anyone know what if any other locomotive models ever received this treatment? Point of trivia: 30th street station in Phila. was originally supposed to have a reversing loop or loops south of the station so trains bound from New York to Harrisburgh/points west could use the station and loop back up to Zoo (tower/junction) to pick up the main line to Harrisburgh. These loops were scrapped when the union station plan (PRR, RDG, B&O) for Phila. fell through. [Yes, 30th street was originally supposed to be a union station; when built it was entirely the Pennsy's.] --Dave
