Buddy Ryan to Philadelphia. I'm glad the Bears won it all this > year. The man is a genius. > Although Buddy Ryan is undoubtedly a great defensive coach, it's worth remembering that he was also the Bear's defensive coach under head coach Neil Armstrong (before Ditka), and while his defensive teams then weren't too bad, they were nothing like the defense is today. Having most of your first round draft picks going to defense hasn't hurt things. (Ryan stayed when Armstrong was canned, at the urging of the Bears' defensive squad. Ditka was probably never overjoyed with the situation, but had the sense to enjoy a good thing while it lasted. Basically, it's the same old media hype: whoever is winning is this year's genius.) Examples: Mike Ditka as Coach of Year Bill Walsh must be getting dumber, as no one calls him a genius anymore. Dick Vermeil was a brilliant coach, but for one season only. Will Buddy Ryuan be a genius next year? (Not likely) Bob Schleicher ihuxk!rs55611
