Check the local taxes of the country you are renting in. In France, the tax on a rental is 33%. If possible, rent in an adjoining country and drive to where you want to be. 2. Pay for a class upgrade at the time of rental. Due to dollar fluctuations, it will most likely be cheaper (Note: I payed $69 for an upgrade to class 'C'. The actual charge in France was $55). 3. When you get your bill check it very carefully (mine was overcharged by $90 which after 10 months I am finally getting back. A further note about item 1: When Hertz calculates your expenses, they do the following: Car for a week $200 Refueling 10 ____ 210 French Tax 70 ____ 280 Less Free Week <200> ---- Amount Billed 80!!!!
