In any case, maybe the Tardis has batteries (Type 40, perhaps?). Actually, that isn't an entirely silly idea. One might hypothesise that there are ''accumulators'' under the console. When it is possible, the accumulators are recharged (automatically). Perhaps these accumulators store enough power to last one for an extended stay in E-space. Or perhaps this is another instance of poor continuity on the part of the writers.
