That would have been a REAL BEAR to find by myself (if I ever could have?)!!! I confirmed that was part of the problem by using 'dd' to read in the tape in question. 'dd' would take a blocking factor of 12 512 blocks but chokedon 13 512 blocks. Unfortunately, I still get the "checksum" error when I try to read a 'tar' tape blocked 10 512 byte records.
