I have spent the last six months sending out letters and made hundereds of phone calls. I am getting the impression that I need to communicate my capacities to those who regularly use the same medium in order to reach the ones who either can use my services or who know those who could directly benefit. Thus this proposed posting. I am aware that it is "advertising", but attorneys are allowed to advertise. Being from the "old school", advertising is new to me. Yet I must reach potential clients who have overcome a natural fear of these machines, who can comprehend the advantages of retaining an attorney who has not only the "legal" background but also the technical experience to provide the qualified professional advice they need and who realize that "being there" can be accomplished electronically as well as face-to-face. I sent it to Mark at net.announce, who felt I should mail it to you and to mod.newprod, which I will also do. Thanks for your consideration. While attorneys are allowed to "advertise", in view of the nature of my specialization, I feel that this posting has the best opportunity to reach an audience that I am sure can use my services or includes those individuals who are in a position to recommend the use of my services to others. My qualifications are summarized below along with the reasons for my feelings. I have been practicing in the field of "Patent Law" since December 1, 1955 (the first patent application I saw was Jay DeForrest's "Three Dimensional Switching Matrices for Computers"). Until October 1, 1975 I was in private practice with Kenyon & Kenyon (New York - 1957-1969) and my own Offices (New York - 1969-1975). In the latter period, I was actively involved with computer law questions, in partcular, with protection and exploitation of intellectual property rights. The next ten years was spent "in-house" with ITT Corporation's Patent Department. Throughout that period, and for the last few years, I handled computer and software matters exclusively. Upon being offered "early retirement" last Summer, in the context of massive layoffs of "Staff", I "opted" to return to private practice. As a part of my work for the past fifteen years, I have made it a part of my "continuing education" to become experienced in the use of computing and to keep up with the developments in this area of the law. This business maintains and uses four computers. There is a "supermicro" Unix V System as the "hub"; an ITT XTRA XP***; and two Compaqs, a Deskpro and a Portable Plus. Each is used for this business for specific purposes whose description exceeds the purpose of this posting. I began assembling this "tmmnet Network" three years ago with a view to assisting small businesses in getting started with or expanding their involvement in computing. Also, I did so in anticipation of returning to private practice. Now that I am "available" again to represent clients, I wanted to use this way of spreading the "word". I am happy to discuss the terms of being retained with anyone having a need. By being a "pioneer" in offering "on-line real-time" legal services; by being qualified by virtue of education and experience; by actual inolvement with the practical use of computers in typical business applications; and by being "available" now, I submit that I am in a position to offer you, your company or clients a unique range of services. Please let me hear from you. tmmnet ltd. Thomas M. Marshall, Esq. [Tom] {ittatc, infopro}tmmnet!tom * Trademark AT&T Bell Laboratories ** Trademark Microsoft Corp. *** Trademarks ITT Corporation
