I've seen a couple of low-cost stereo "wholesaler" stores that sell physically broken and/or otherwise damaged tape decks, vcrs, etc at ridiculously low prices. I know one guy who picked up a VCR for about $20 -- cosmetically, it looks like it's been run over by a semi; it also had some cracked PC boards, but all the traces were otherwise intact and the tape transport was mechanically sound. Took some time, effort, and about 50 cents (yes, cents) worth of new components to make it functional. Despite its looks, it now works fine. Anyway, I'm thinking that with a little scrounging you might turn up the guts of an appropriately equipped tape deck or something. Of course, odds are way against you finding the exact components that you're interested in, but you never know, something useful might turn up ... bill frolik hplabs!hp-pcd!bill
