I want to purchase a new bicycle in the next month or so.  Currently, I ride
a Schwinn Varsity but I'm more than ready for something better.

What I would like from folks in net.land is your recommendations on bikes in
the <$400 range.

I think a sports-tourer is what I want.

I'm also interested in your opinions of the various mail order firms, bike
magazines, helmets, and light sets.
