I found this gem in Daredevil (The Man Without Fear) #77.

	And then. . .it happens--
	Filling the wintered glades of central park
	with an unearthly whine--
	painting the leaf-bare branches
	with golden fire--

		THE TEARDROP EXPLODES!


For the uninitiated in both groups:

The Teardrop Explodes was a Liverpool group who made two (very good)
albums around 1980 (or thereabouts).  They had several British hits,
and broke up.  The leader, Julian Cope has made several solo records,
which I am not familiar with.  The two albums--*Kilamanjaro*(sp.) and
*Wilder* are still available where ever finer cut-outs are sold.

The issue of Daredevil in question came out in the early seventies, so
there is no question as to who originated the phrase.  Daredevil was
quite good at this point, featuring some quite spectacular Gene Colan/
Tom Palmer art, although the writing (Gene Conway) was mainly warmed over
post Green Lantern/Green Arrow "relevence".
