Emery) Distribution: net Organization: Superfrog Heaven [ CRDS, Framingham MA ] Lines: 29 Keywords: DEA patent lucifer IBM Does anyone out there know if use of the DEA (software version of DES) for such things as password encryption and the crypt(2) command requires a license from IBM and/or royalty payments to IBM ? (Note that CRDS is using DEA in independantly developed UNIX look-alike software so whatever arrangement AT&T might have made with IBM for UNIX proper is not relevant here). It seems that the federal standard publication on DEA/DES makes mention of IBM Lucifer patents. I seem to remember that IBM put the whole thing into the public domain some years ago as part of the federal standardization process and grants everyone who asks a non-exclusive royalty free license. I cannot find any specific proof that this is indeed the case however. If anyone knows more about this I would appreciate hearing from them by either email, US SNAIL or (last resort) posting to the net. ---- David I.
