A: Urogue is a "derivative" of the game rogue and contains several interesting new features. Q: Is it public domain? A: It is not public domain, but the author is releasing the game using the "barter" system. Q: Can anyone give it to me? A: No, you can only get it from the author legally. You probably could get a copy from the "black market" :-) Q: How is "Urogue" similar to "Rogue"? A: Urogue is similar to "Rogue" in a few points: 1. The basic screen appearance, 2. The basic commands (not those introduced beyond 5.2), 3. The method of playing (i.e. bump into monster: attack), 4. The type of game, 5. The types of treasure, 6. The way to win, 7. The object representations. Q: How is "Urogue" compared to the new "Advanced Rogue"s (5.5 and up)? A: Urogue and 5.5 (and up) are extremely similar, but the version which are the most similar is AR 6.0 and Urogue. They both feature the extended monster set, multiple artifacts with power(s), new "types" of rooms. Q: Is "Urogue" available on all types of systems? A: Urogue is not available on all types of systems, but is available on several major machines and UNIX versions, and is expected to be ported to others in the near future. ------------------------------------------ ROGUE VERSIONS: Another Update ------------------------------------------ Here is a current list of versions: Rogue 3.6, 3.7, 3.7.1, Advanced Rogue 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 (the original authors) Advanced Rogue 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5.9, 6.0 Advanced Rogue 1.0, 2.0 Super Rogue 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 Personal Computer Rogues available for: IBM, Macintosh. Personal Computer Rogues were planned for: Atari, C64. Probably a few versions missing. ------------------------------------------ THE TOTAL WINNER: What happens ------------------------------------------ In *most* versions, here is what happens: 1. A screen congradulates you. 2. You get paid for your possessions: (a) food is cheaper than fruit (b) rings are valued by the type of rock (diamond, ...) (c) staffs are valued by type of wood (d) a +255 ring is THE SAME AS a -255 ring! (e) a 255 charge staff is the same as a 0 charge staff! (f) weapons and armor are valued by type AND magic charge. (g) Amulet is a constant gp value. 3. You get a total. 4. You are added to the winner list. It is possible in all versions to be a total winner, and total winners have been recorded in most of the versions of rogue listed above (some of the versions are too new!). ------------------------------------------ ROGUE PLAYING ESTIMATION: A "poll" of version(s) being played ------------------------------------------ Here is the current Rogue Playing Estimation: (#'s are estimated as a result of polls and may or may not be accurate) AR 5.5 26% Urogue 27% Rogue 5.3 11% Rogue 5.2 11% IBM PC Rogue 10% Super Rogue 7.0/9.0 5% Macintosh Rogue 3% Rogue 3.6/3.7 3% ------------------------------------------ THE LIFE AND DEATH AND LIFE OF ROGUE: A short break of life caused by "Hack" ------------------------------------------ In a previous issue, I had predicted a decline of Hack players and an increase of Rogue players. I had predicted that the Advanced Rogue 5.5 (and up)s would swing everyone back. There indeed has been a decline in Hack players, and an increase in Rogue players. Right now, the increase looks like it was caused by: (1) Urogue, and (2) PC versions. There has been a decline in articles in the repective net groups for both games. This has only two apparent reasons: (1) less participation in the game or (2) less problems or questions in the game. Actually, it is a cause of (1) less problems caused by more "expert" players and PC versions resulting in less net participation. hou2e!ksl --R-O-G-U-E-- |A net.games| Collect 7 and receive | article | a free article.* | 765654543 | --R-O-G-U-E-- * while supplies last
