A favorite example of meta humor is from Annie Hall:

Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) is being bothered by a pseudo-intellectual in line
who is quoting Marshall McCluhan.  Alvy replies "Well I happen to have Mr.
McCluhan right here" fetches him from behind a sign board, and proceeds to
deflate the pseudo-intellectual.  Alvy then remarks to the camera:  "don't you
wish real life was like this..."
