For a good explanation of a LOT of LAN (not just ETHERNET) concepts, check out the DEC-press book, "Introduction to Local Area Networks". It USED to be free from DEC in SMALL (< 10) quantities, although you'll have to check your local office to be sure. Another good book is "Guidebook to LANs", by Prentice-Hall books. This is NOT cheap ($70), but is one of the best-organized books I've seen for LANs. It goes from easy to fairly detailed descriptions , and is well-indexed. It comes in a ring binder. I can dig out the ISBN # if anyone else is interested.
