Bonetti APPLE COMPUTER ORDERS CRAY X-MP SUPERCOMPUTER Minneapolis, February 18, 1986 -- Cray Research, Inc., announced today that Apple Computer, Inc. has ordered a CRAY X-MP/48 supercomputer. The system is valued at approximately $14.5 million and will be installed in the second quarter of 1986 at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The system will be used to simulate future hardware and software architectures and to accelerate new product development. "In order for us to remain a technology leader in the personal computer industry, we must be willing to make significant investments in research and development," said Delbert W. Yocam, Apple's executive vice president of product operation. "With the CRAY X-MP supercomputer and its powerful simulation capabilities, we will be able to evaluate a greater variety of future product direction."
