The latest thing I've heard is that there hasn't been a single 1040
sent over from Japan yet.  When they do get here (about a week, I
was told), they'll probably spend a week in Atari's QA department
for testing and then be shipped.  There will be only 4 (!) distributors
for 1040s in the US.  So the bottom line from my dealer is that it
will be about three more weeks before I see my 1040.  *sigh*
