The following connections have worked for a Mac to Racal-Vadic modem
link:

DB-25                      DB-9
-----                      -----
  6                          2
  7                          3
  2                          5
  20                         6
  5                          7
  8 (jumpered to 5)          7
  1                          8
  3                          9

The remaining DB-25 pins should be unconnected. If this doesn't work
you can always try plugging in your Applewriter cable. 
I had to make a cable by hand for a Mac w/ MacTerminal to VAX connection
a while back.
