(guest of Ohio State U.) Lines: 33 Well, in a way, John Hughes (Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc.) has succeeded again. Pretty in Pink manages to be a reasonably intelligent look at high school life, particularly the juxtaposition of different types of people. In "The Breakfast Club", we got jocks vs geeks vs nerds vs popular preps. In "Pretty in Pink" we get those with money and 'stuff' and those without. All in all, the movie works, but suffers for a lack of secondary character development. The character played by Harry Dean Stanton (Molly Ringwald's father in the movie) is a good example. What little information we get about him is very superficial, as is his being forced to face his problems by his teenage daughter. A guy throws his life away after being deserted by his wife, and is supposedly turned around by one talk from his daughter three years after the fact. I don't believe it. Evey time the dialog stops, they cut to a different camera angle or a different scene, and the music starts in at twice the volume that makes sense in context. While someone is talking, the music works well in the background. When they stop speaking, it's front row at Madison Square Garden. Trivia note: the ending credits listed Dweezil Zappa as Simon, but I don't recall a character with that name in the movie. Worth looking for him if you care. Summary: Worth $2.50, but not $4.75. -- < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < <> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Mark D.
