One very cold morning, they woke up to find the familiar lump cuddled up under the blankets on the foot of the bed; assuming it was their cat, they got up as usual, got dressed, etc. and when they went to make the bed, a full-grown raccoon crawled out from under the blanket and nonchalantly waddled back out through the pet door.
