Yes, but why were women targeted as the group to take advantage of?

Are you seriously suggesting that it is the threat of rape that has
forced women into the role of homemaker, and that women have quietly
accepted that over the centuries? It's unlikely that this could be 
the basis for a stable society over any long period of time.
