Imagine my surprise when I came across the following in the Feb./Mar. 1986 issue of "Campus Voice -- the National College Magazine": "At Georgia Institute of Technology a mythical student is the Big Man On Campus. About 60 years ago, two students "enrolled" George P. Burdell, and his name has appeared on class rosters ever since. Students not only answer for him during roll calls but also take exams in his name. In the early '70s, when the university converted to computer registration, administrators thought the nonexistent Burdell would finally "drop out." Instead, his name appeared on every class roll in the university. In addition to earning an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering, George P. Burdell has acquired a draft card (and, alas, a draft notice), insurance policies, and credit cards." -- Cameron C.
