New Zealand does NOT require a visa from a casual, short-term American visitor (e.g., 3 weeks there). The American must have an outward-bound ticket to show that they have the resources to leave the country, and must have an American passport that is good for at least three months after the day they arrive in New Zealand. Japan and Australia do require visas. In Japan you can get at least a transit visa after arriving at the airport.
