I plan on stopping over in Tokyo and Singapore en route to India
this August. I am especially interested in :

a) Getting to know the 'locals', i.e., I would prefer to stay
   with a family, if possible, rather than stay at a hotel.

b) Getting a comprehensive and reasonably priced guided
   tour. I personally prefer to stay away from guided tours,
   but since I can manage only 2 days per location, I don't have
   much of a choice.

c) Purchasing craft items, i.e., exquisite china, artwork, etc.

If anyone out there has any info regarding any of the above, I'd
really appreciate it. I would especially welcome info on
places to shop, names of reasonably priced accomodations, etc.
