The first thing I'd do would be to change "syslog" to "/etc/syslog" to
make sure that your cron job can find syslog.  A common problem is that
cron jobs bomb because cron can run with a different $PATH than what you'd
have for a login shell.  This can cause some rather mysterious failures of
things like "look right."
