Our initial requirements were that it be capable of 60 pages/minutes, 300x300 dots per square inch, duplex feature and must be capable of online interface to an IBM 3000 series channel. We use Waterloo SCRIPT, and would require that the new device have SCRIPTW support. Our future plans include supporting TEK, as well. (Initial plans called for not only replacing the IBM 6670, but replacing one impact system printer, as well.) Based on some of the responses, we are now wondering if we should be looking at the Xerox 3700, simply as a replacement for the 6670 and forget replacing the one impact printer for the present. (Keeping in mind that we are under a severe budget crunch and whatever the new device(s), the funds must be equal to or less than the funds saved by old equipment going out the door!) One concern is that the 3700 does not currently have TEK support, although our TEK representative said if the 3700 has Interpress support, an Interpress driver is coming soon. My understanding is that Interpress is a communications protocol for typesetting type printers. No one locally has heard of Interpress. Anyone know anything about it? Back to the 3700... Any comments about quality, reliability, etc. of the 3700 vs. the 8700? Also, in considering both printers, how are other institutions accounting for pages out? We are reaching the critical point where our decision on what laser support will be offered next year must be made. With the unreliability of our IBM 6670, even a device with some SCRIPT limitations is probably preferable to staying with our current configuration. Responses to the above questions would be greatly appreciated. Linda Hutchison Manager of Programming Consultants (User Services) Iowa State University Computation Center
