Of course they never are I suppose. We got the box to run lisp and prolog. The lisp was broken and the prolog document does not match the (apparently quite good) prolog. We recently got a new version of lisp (franz 39.xx) which is much better than the one delivered with the system. We have not hooked up the ethernet yet but the serial stuff is fine.
